View the Post Card Show
The Post Card Show during ArtsWalk was so successful the Columbia County Council on the Arts decided to do it again, only bigger.  Eleven artists of the 50 or so artists exhibiting in the Post Card Show were invited to show larger works, enhancements of the post card themes into bigger formats, deepening explorations of media and topics.  The show is called Continuum and can be viewed at the Arts Council gallery through January 26.  The gallery is open Monday-Friday 9:30 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.  For more information about the Columbia County Council on the Arts call (518) 671-6213 or visit their website at www.artscolumbia.org.

Enjoy a Ballroom Dance
Hudson Valley Academy of Performing Arts will host a Ballroom Dance every second Saturday.  Kick off 2008 on January 12.  Admission is only $10 and gets you lessons from 7:00 to 8:00 pm, dance until 10:00 pm.  It also includes snacks and drinks.  Join the fun today!  New for 2008 is Cardio Hip Hop classes.   They will be held Monday nights from 7:30 to 8:30 pm.  Have fun and dance off those winter pounds!  For more information about Hudson Valley Academy of Performing Arts call (518) 851-5501 or visit their website at www.hvapa.com.

Attend the 2nd annual Farm Film Fest
The Columbia Land Conservancy, Chatham Agricultural Partnership and The Chatham Film Club will host the 2nd annual Farm Film Fest on Sunday, January 13 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Crandell Theatre in Chatham.  Admission is free.  Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to support Chatham's Silent Pantry.  For more information about the Columbia Land Conservancy call (518) 392-5252 or visit their website at www.clctrust.org.

Enjoy a Winter Exploration
Hawthorne Valley Farm will lead five winter walks at various sites around the County in January and February.  During the walks attendees will dabble in winter botany and, if weather allows, with snow tracking plus some bits and pieces of history and geology.  Dress warmly for the walks and feel free to bring along a hot beverage to keep warm.  The walks begin at 1:00 pm.  The dates are January 6, 13, & 20.  The walks are free, but registration is required.   For more information about Hawthorne Valley Farm's Farmscape Ecology program call (518) 781-0243 or visit their website at www.hawthornevalleyfarm.org.

See a Performance
The Taconic Hills Performing Arts Center will feature the SUNY Fredonia Jazz Ensemble on Thursday, January 17.  The Ensemble will offer free workshop clinics for students and the public.  They will be held from 2:15 to 4:30 pm for students and 3:45 to 4:30 pm for the public.  The jazz sessions are designed for individual and group instruction.  Included in the roster is the opportunity to play improvisational jazz with fellow musicians in an informal setting.  As part of the 2008 New York State Tour, the student run organization out of Fredonia State University, Fredonia Jazz Ensemble, will spend the school day at Taconic Hills Central School conducting jazz clinics to High and Middle School music students and presenting an assembly to Middle School students.   For more information about the Taconic Hills Performing Arts Center call (518) 325-0447 or visit their website at www.taconichills.k12.ny.us/community/pac.

Attend an Auction
Stair Galleries will host an Exposition Auction on Friday, January 18 at 6:00 pm.  The auction will offer a large and extensive collection of 19th and 20th century decorative arts including pottery porcelain, art glass, Dore bronze clocks and garnitures, lamps, fine art of marble, bronze, terra cotta, etc; prints and paintings of various periods and style along with furniture from period to reproduction.  For more information about Stair Galleries call (518) 751-1000 or visit their website at www.stairgalleries.com.

Celebrate a Winter Feast
The Spencertown Academy Arts Center will host the 20th annual Spencertown Revels, a mid-winter moveable feast.  This year's theme is "Food, Glorious Food" celebrating the art of the table.  The evening will begin with a festive cocktail party at the Academy with a sumptuous array of hors d'oeuvres, fine wines and specialty drinks.  A fabulous silent auction gives you a chance to bid for catered dinners, in-home wine tastings, designer tableware and more.  Then it’s off to a wonderful dinner with old friends and new at a private home hosted by a friend of the Academy.  A special feature of this year's party will be the Revels Raffle with a chance to dine out once a month for a full year at some of the area's best restaurants. Enjoy a Family House Tour and a Winter Walk
Olana State Historic Site will host a Family Tour of Olana on Saturday, January 19 at 1:00 pm.   Enjoy a tour of the house specifically geared toward children and families.  Then take a Snowshoe Walk for Beginners on Sunday, January 20 at 2:00 pm.  Winter Walks are a sure cure for cabin fever, so learn the basic technique of snowshoeing at Olana, and get outside for some winter fun!  Bring your snowshoes or call to reserve a pair.  For more information about Olana State Historic Site call (518) 828-0135 or visit their website at www.olana.org.

See a Show
The Ghent Playhouse will feature "Picnic" from January 25 through February 10.  The play begins with Hal arriving in a small Southern town to visit Alan, his old college friend.  Hal is hoping to secure a steady job working for Alan's father, but his rough manners and good looks quickly get him into trouble.  He becomes attracted to Alan's fiancée Madge, the prettiest girl in town, and is likewise adored by Millie, Madge's younger sister and Rosemary, a teacher who rents a room from their mother.  For tickets or more information about the Ghent Playhouse call (518) 392-6264 or visit their website at www.ghentplayhouse.org.

Sharpen Your Skis
Winter is here!  Get out and enjoy some great skiing at Catamount Ski Area.  Catamount starts its Wednesday night race leagues on Wednesday, January 9 and will feature a variety of events throughout the season.
