Computer Security Basics Seminar with Robert Trevellyan
Thursday, June 10, 2010 the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce presents “Computer Security Basics,” a one hour seminar presented by Robert Trevellyan, highlighting some of the risks faced when computers are connected to the internet and steps that can be taken to limit those risks. The seminar will be held Joslen Commons in Hudson. Registration begins at 7:30am, followed by the program from 8:00-9:00am.
Robert Trevellyan, half of the Trevellyan.biz team, provides onsite and remote support for individuals and businesses on PC and Mac. “I will offer technical advice and practical tips that will make you and your information safer,” Trevellyan said. “I run a small business too, so I know how busy things can get and how easy it is to just let things slide. But we’re all relying more and more on our computers, and computer security too important to ignore."
Individuals and small business owners are often unclear on the types of security threat that they face online and what they can do to combat them. This can lead to inaction and vulnerability, even though there are some simple steps that anyone can take to improve the security of their system. According to research firm AMI-Partners, almost half of all small and medium sized businesses have not implemented even basic security precautions like installation of antivirus software.
Topics to be covered include setting up a firewall, managing user accounts and passwords, browser configuration and taking advantage of free software updates. Viruses, spyware, hacking, and phishing will also be addressed. Come and learn the basics of computer security for yourself or or your business.
Admission to the seminar is $10, which includes a continental breakfast. Call the Chamber at 518.828.4417 for reservations by June 7. Joslen Commons is located on at 540 Joslen Boulevard in Hudson, NY.
