Message
from the President
“It’s
certainly not my father’s Chamber of Commerce.”
That is how one member light heartedly described the Chamber
before a recent event. A funny comment to be sure, but also
one that speaks to the progressive nature of the organization.
There
is definitely a new energy and pride many members are expressing
about “their” Chamber. This Chamber has evolved
over 30 years and enhanced the ability to serve member needs
along the way. Today we have a dynamic membership that realizes
working together yields significant advocacy and promotional
synergy.
Two
keys to a resurgent Chamber are the right people and the right
processes.
People ~ We are attracting high quality people who wish to
move things forward. For these volunteers taking positions,
progressive programs and first class marketing are not optional,
it is expected. The same things that work in building their
business also work in a Chamber environment. Following best
business practices continues to build the Chamber into the
type of leading organization people want to be part of.
Processes
~ Simply put, we have made it easier to get things done. We
have a well defined business plan but still give individual
committees the autonomy to carry out programs in their area
of expertise. A properly focused Board sets policy and does
not do the work of committees. This enlightened sense of mission
has allowed the Chamber Board to focus on big picture items.
One
of my favorite quotes speaks to why it is imperative to have
the right people and processes in place:
When the rate of change outside your organization
is greater than the rate of change on the inside,
the end is near. ~ Jack Welch
For our next progressive initiative…stay tuned.
Sincerely,
David
