On Monday, May 9 at 7:00 pm the Hudson Opera House presents the Black Violin. Combining a daunting array of musical styles and influences to produce a signature sound that is not quite maestro, not quite emcee, this group of two classically trained violinists and their DJ is redefining the music world-one string at a time. With influences ranging from Shostakovich and Bach to Nas and Jay-Z, Black Violin breaks all the rules, blending the classical with the modern to create something rare-a sound that nobody has ever heard, but that everybody wants to feel. The 6th annual Hudson Valley Songfest is scheduled for May 14 at Club Helsinki in Hudson, NY. Produced by Columbia Arts Team, a locally-based not-for-profit performing arts company, the Songfest enables area songwriters, musicians and performers to have access to major music industry professionals and hit songwriters, and learn about the latest trends and changes that affect the music business. Admission for an all-day pass to the panels and seminars is $50 (in advance), or $60 during the week preceding the event and at the door. Some of the industry guests will also be available for a one-on-one consultation for an additional fee. At The Fields Sculpture Park from 12:00 - 2:00 on Saturday, May 28, the community is invited to bring their kites, or come to make them with us, on a special day of family fun. Feel free to bring a picnic to the park and make a day of it. Workshops on making kites from recycled plastic bags and decorating pre-made "sled kites" will be offered by Omi staff and volunteers. Sunday, May 29 from 4:30 - 8:00 pm the Columbia Land Conservancy will hold the 25th Anniversary Country Barbecue at Old Chatham Sheepherding Company in Old Chatham. At this family friendly event will be the kick-off to CLC’s 25th year celebration, children of all ages can expect lots of hands-on activities, interactive displays, and cool projects to make-and-take. There will be a working oxen demonstration, duck herding border collies, a farm animal petting zoo and much more. Children will have the opportunity to learn all about the wildlife at CLC’s Public Conservation Areas in our activities tent with multiple make-and-take projects. Other highlights throughout the day include variety performances by the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, music from the Mountain Laurel Band, fresh local food and beverage, dancing and the always popular silent auction.
