Pattern for Progress Awards Chamber Regional Achievement Award
Pattern for Progress recently presented the Chamber of Commerce with the Regional Achievement Award for successfully bridging the Hudson River to demonstrate the power of regional cooperation.  Three other Columbia and Greene County organizations were also awarded the Regional Achievement Award.  They included Columbia-Greene Community College, Greene County Chamber of Commerce, and The United Way of Columbia and Greene Counties.  The Pattern for Progress awards are held annually to recognize organizations working together in the region.  Please click here for more information.
Chamber Presents Check to Chatham Business Alliance
The Chamber presented a $500 check to the Chatham Business Alliance (CBA) to help aid them in starting a website to help them further promote their members and businesses in the Village of Chatham.  With major road construction on the horizon, the Chamber has partnered with the Chatham Business Alliance to provide information to the local businesses about how they can keep business strong during the road construction early next spring.  Please click here for more information.

Holiday Business After Hours - December 13, 2007
Join the Chamber for the annual Holiday Business After Hours on Thursday, December 13.  The event will be hosted by the Spencertown Academy Arts Center from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  The Chamber will be introducing the 2008 Board of Directors and unveiling the 2008 Directory and Community Guide.  The Spencertown Academy is a cultural center which serves the community with arts events, classes and exhibits, and has also been restoring the building which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The Spencertown Academy is located at 790 Route 203 in Spencertown.  Please click here for more information.
The Bank of Greene County Business After Hours - January 31, 2008

Vico Restaurant Business After Hours - February 20, 2008

19th Annual Crystal Apple Award Gala - Chamber Seeks Nominations
The Chamber is seeking nominations for the 19th annual Crystal Apple Award Gala.  This prestigious award is presented to a Chamber member business to recognize an extraordinary contribution to economic progress, community improvement, and the quality of life in Columbia County during 2007.  All Chamber member businesses are eligible and candidate nominations will be accepted until January 7, 2008.  The Gala will be held on February 29 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Columbia Golf and Country Club.  Please click here for more information and for a nomination form.

Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP)
If your small business is faced with a technical challenge SATOP can provide up to 40 hours of FREE technical assistance for qualified requests, utilizing the vast engineering expertise of NASA and participating Alliance Partners (NASA contractors, sub-contractors or Universities).  SATOP is designed to speed the transfer of US Space Program knowledge and technology to small businesses, to provide economic benefits to the community, and to raise public awareness of the Space program.  Please click here for more information.
Chamber Stats

Kinderhook Bank has elevated two key executives as stated by Bank President and CEO Robert Sherwood.  George Cooper and Joanne Phillips were named vice presidents.  Both were previously assistant vice presidents.  Sherwood stated that they were pleased to recognize the outstanding leadership and dedication of George and Joanne.  The Bank operates four full-service offices in Columbia County and a new office in East Greenbush.  For more information about Kinderhook Bank call 758-7101 or visit their website site at www.nubk.com.

The Shaker Museum and Library has hired a new president, David Stock to lead the organization.  A Kansas native who now lives in Spencertown, Stocks has extensive experience with fundraising for non-profits  and has served in the leadership of several historic preservation groups.  One of Stock's key duties will be to oversee the restoration of the North Family Shaker site at Mount Lebanon, where the museum will eventually relocate.  Founded in 1950 by John S. Williams, Sr., the Shaker Museum & Library has since operated continuously on the site of his farm in Old Chatham. Columbia-Greene Facilitated Enrollment Program, a program of the Healthcare Consortium is pleased to announce the availability of enrollment counselors in the twin counties for Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus and Medicaid.  Many working individuals and families experience difficulty finding affordable health insurance.  If your children are uninsured, you can talk with an Enrollment Counselor about Child Health Plus, a free or low-cost health insurance program.  Enrollment counselors offer eligibility screening and application assistance for individuals and families wishing to obtain affordable health insurance.  For more information about the programs of the Healthcare Consortium call (518) 822-9600 or visit their website at www.columbiahealthnet.org.


The Columbia-Greene Diabetes Coalition will present helpful information for managing diabetes through the festive holiday season at the December 7 diabetes education and support meeting in Catskill.  The meeting will be held in the 4th floor conference room of the Greene County office building.  The topic "Holiday Management" will be facilitated by Ruth Breuning, RN, BS, CDE, a certified diabetes educator from Albany Memorial Hospital.  She will share planning tips to help individuals with diabetes enjoy the holidays.  The meeting runs from 3:00 to 4:00 pm.   For more information about the Healthcare Consortium call (518) 828-8820 visit their website to register at www.columbiahealthnet.org.

School Information


The Doane Stuart School will host an Open House on Saturday, January 12, 2008 at 10:00 am.  The Open House is for any families interested in nursery through grade 12 for the 2008-2009 school year and beyond.  A special program and tours of the campus will be given at the Open House.  For more information about the Doane Stuart School call (518) 465-5222 or visit www.doanestuart.org.

Community Events

The Kinderhook Village annual Candlelight Night will be held on Friday, December 7 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.  Come and enjoy the night with your family and friends and celebrate the season with the Village shopkeepers, business owners and the museums.  Luminaries will light your way to the Greens show at the James Vanderpoel House, a tour of Historic homes on Broad Street, horse drawn sleigh rides at Fairpoint Telephone, wine tasting at the OK Package Store, carolers, Santa Claus at Kinderhook Bank and much more.  For more information about this event visit the Kinderhook Business and Professional Association website at www.kbpa.org.

On Friday, December 14 the Village of Valatie will hold its annual Winter Walk in Valatie from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.  Enjoy storytelling, musicians, a performance by the Ghent Band, face painters, carolers, refreshments, hayrides down Main Street and Santa Claus arrives at 6:00 pm.  The event is sponsored by the Valatie Economic Redevelopment Association.  For more information about the Village of Valatie call (518) 758-9806 or visit their website at www.valatievillage.com.

Winterfest is almost here! Chatham Village becomes a winter wonderland on Friday, December 21, 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Just as in our memories of days long past, window displays will twinkle with lights and delights. Stores will offer shoppers cookies and other seasonal treats. Entertainers will be on the streets and you may well find yourself singing along with the carolers. Take a magical ride in a antique tractor-drawn stagecoach and then visit jolly old Santa.  Chatham, the retail center of Northern Columbia County, has a wide variety of creative and wonderful shops and businesses. Unlike the cookie cutter shops at malls, Chatham Village shops offer unique and hard-to-find items. Entertainment for all ages will be available. Just four days before Santa is due to arrive, older folks may simply want to finish up their shopping in a relaxed, happy atmosphere. Children will be treated to stagecoach rides, street entertainment, visiting Santa, and having their faces painted with seasonal designs. The pocket lady will be strolling the village giving out treats to good little girls and boys.
