Join Chamber in Fight to Keep Hudson Correctional Facility Open
The state's threatened closing of Hudson Correctional Facility has the local community up in arms.  The Columbia County Chamber Board of Directors voted unanimously to oppose the closure of the Hudson Correctional Facility.  The Chamber joins Mayor Rick Scalera, Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator Stephen Saland, Assemblyman Marc Molinaro and County Board of Supervisors in their effort to get this decision reversed.  For more information on how you can get involved click here.

Vote for the Crystal Apple Award Recipient through February 22, 2008

The Painted Dogs Are Coming to Columbia County - Public Art Project 2008
The Chamber and Columbia County Council on the Arts are pleased to announce the collaboration to bring "Best in Show" 2008 to Columbia County.  The Public Art Display will feature 60 dogs painted by local artists up and down Warren Street.  If you've seen the Cats in Catskill, the Horses in Saratoga or the Sheep in Pittsfield you know how exciting this is for Columbia County.  The display will begin in July and conclude with an Auction and Gala in October.  These dogs need your help!  Please click on the following link to learn more about sponsoring a dog for your business.  All Columbia County businesses are encouraged to participate in this wonderful community project.  Be one of the first to sponsor a dog and have your name announced at the press conference on February 14.  Please click here for a sponsorship packet.

Vico Restaurant Business After Hours - February 20, 2008
Vico Restaurant will host a Business After Hours on Wednesday, February 20 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  Join us to sample their exquisite food.  "Vico" means village in the Tuscan dialect, and it is their aim to build a community around locally grown, seasonal ingredients, uncomplicated preparation based on the centuries-old traditions of Italian cuisine, learning about naturally produced, small-scale wines from Tuscany and other regions of Italy as well as personalized service.  Business After Hours' offer excellent networking opportunities for area business people. Chamber Ski Nite - March 1, 2008 - at Catamount Ski Area
The Columbia County Chamber, Southern Berkshire Chamber and Catamount Ski Area will host a night of discounted skiing and snowboarding for Chamber members and the public on Saturday, March 1 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm.  Lift tickets are $15, rentals $15 and lessons $10.  Entertainment will be provided.  We hope you will join us for this fun event and support business in Columbia County.  Catamount Ski Area is located on Route 23 in Hillsdale.  Please click here for more information.
Tourism Leadership Luncheon - March, 5, 2008 - SOLD OUT
The Chamber will host a Tourism Leadership Luncheon on Wednesday, March 5 at 12:00 pm.  The luncheon will be held at the Culinary Arts Building on the Questar III campus in Hudson.  The focus of the lunch will be the Hudson~Fulton~Champlain Quadricentennial coming up in 2009.  This historical anniversary will be a state wide celebration centering on the Hudson River.  The event has sold out, but you may contact the Chamber at 828-4417 or mail@columbiachamber-ny.com to be added to a waiting list. 
Agricultural Business Brunch - March 12, 2008
Come and see what the Columbia County Bounty (CCB) program has cooking at the annual Agricultural Business Brunch on Wednesday, March 12 from 11:00 to 12:30 pm.  It's been a wonderful year since the launch of CCB at last year's Ag Brunch.  CCB will be unveiling their new website and detailing their plans for 2008 and beyond.   The brunch will also feature a panel of speakers focusing on Culinary & Agritourism and the importance to the Hudson Valley.  Enjoy a palette of local foods and table top exhibits by local farms, chefs and producers.  The brunch will be held at Space 360 located at 360 Warren Street in Hudson.  The event is sponsored by First Niagara Bank; Kinderhook Bank; Taconic Farms, Inc.; The Register Star/Chatham Courier; Columbia Land Conservancy and Hawthorne Valley Association.  Please click here for more information.

Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP)
If your small business is faced with a technical challenge SATOP can provide up to 40 hours of FREE technical assistance for qualified requests, utilizing the vast engineering expertise of NASA and participating Alliance Partners (NASA contractors, sub-contractors or Universities).  SATOP is designed to speed the transfer of US Space Program knowledge and technology to small businesses, to provide economic benefits to the community, and to raise public awareness of the Space program.  Please click here for more information.
Chamber Stats

Columbia County Habitat for Humanity will host a Chinese New Year dinner on Friday, February 8 at 7:00 pm in St. James Church in Chatham.  The dinner will benefit Habitat's latest project, a Women Build.  The local Habitat plans to add two more homes to the Mill Street, Hudson site graciously donated by the City of Hudson.  Construction starts in May and one of the projects will be a Women's Build.  Women Builds encourage participation by females who normally may be too shy or intimidated by traditional builds.  The Chinese New Year dinner, Bowls of Happiness, celebrates 2008, the Year of the Rat.  The dinner will offer a Chinese feast catered by well-known chefs and Chatham residents Tung Chi Lee and Tom Carlucci.  Tickets are selling fast.    For tickets or more information about Habitat for Humanity call 567-1115 or visit their website site at www.columbiacountyhabitat.org.

The Hudson Area Association Library will feature a special program for children on Friday, February 15 from 2:30 to 3:30 pm.  Teaching Spirit proudly presents Magic Carpet Ride.  Children can grab their magic carpet and join Reiki Master Vicki L. on a journey into your imagination.  Through drumming, visualization, muscle relaxation and breathing, your child will learn how to handle stress decrease anxiety, increase self esteem and improve academic abilities.  For kids K-4.  No fee or registration.  For more information about the Hudson Area Association Library call (518) 697-0485 or visit their website at http://hudson.lib.ny.us.

Walking the Dog Theater will present The Actor's Ensemble production of "I Might Be Edgar Allen Poe" March 14 through March 16 at Space 360 in Hudson.  This new play will give anyone unfamiliar with Poe's writing a thrilling introduction.  Since Joseph's admission to Oakbrook after "the incident with the fire", he has endured endless therapy sessions, but not without coming up with a few ideas of his own.  In fact he has discovered that he might be the master of horror fiction himself, Edgar Allen Poe.  Enjoy the play which critics have called engaging, amusing and disturbing all at once.  For more information about Walking the Dog Theater call (518) 610-0909 or visit their website at www.wtdtheater.org.

School Information

The Taconic Hills Performing Arts Center will feature the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company on Saturday, February 9 at 2:00 pm.  The Dance Company will present the uniquely American art form of contemporary modern dance with a visually enchanting repertoire that brings the excitement and innovation of dance through the combination of movement, sound and visual imagery.  Ellen Sinopoli and her dancers artfully engage one's senses with the breadth of originality, vibrant energy and sharply defined dance athleticism.  For tickets or more information about the Taconic Hills Performing Arts Center call (518) 325-0447 or visit their website at www.taconichills.k12.ny.us/community/pac.

The 2nd Annual Hudson Valley Cheese Festival returns to Hudson on Sunday, February 17 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.  The event is a fundraiser for Columbia County Bounty, an organization working to support Columbia County farmers and communities affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce.  The event will feature a selection of fine cheeses, wines and culinary delights from local restaurants.  Last year's event sold out quickly, so contact the Chamber today to reserve your ticket.  The event will be held at the Deffebach Gallery located at 135 Warren Street in Hudson.  For tickets or more information about the Hudson Valley Cheese Festival call (518) 828-4417 or visit the website at www.hudsonvalleycheesefestival.com.

Need a good laugh?  See the show that puts the comedy back in musical comedy!  The hit of the Copake Theatre Company's 2003-04 season is back by popular demand.  Elise Dewsberry flies in from Los Angeles to star in the Company's one woman musical "Nine Months"  Dewsberry plays three very different women going through the joys and tribulations of pregnancy.  Light-hearted, laugh-out-loud humorous for men as well as women and ultimately touching, Nine Months has played hundreds of performances in theaters from California to Nova Scotia.  The show will be featured from February 22 through March 2 at the Copake Grange.  For tickets or more information about the Copake Theatre Company call (518) 325-1234 or visit their website at www.copaketheatrecompany.com.
