Agricultural Awareness Brunch - March 14, 2007
We invite you to learn about some very exciting new field to table initiatives in Columbia County during the Agricultural Brunch on Wednesday, March 14.  The focus of this year's brunch will be on the New Faces of Farming in Columbia County and will feature a panel of speakers speaking about their innovative programs.  The Farm to Chef Committee was formed out of last year's Agricultural Brunch and they have been working to bring together farmers and chefs and will be unveiling the Columbia County Bounty program.  You will also hear about another exciting project where a local apple farmer developed a new way to utilize his produce to create a new industry for the business.  The final presenter will speak about the new Hudson Valley Agribusiness Development Corporation and the vision for this organization.  The brunch will be held at Bridges at the St. Charles Hotel from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm.    Please click here for more information.

3rd Biennial Agriculture in the Hudson River Valley Conference - March 16, 2007
On Friday, March 16 the Hudson Valley Agricultural Partnership will hold the 3rd Biennial Conference at Columbia-Greene Community College.  The conference will focus on Agriculture in the Hudson River Valley: Success Stories from Our Own Backyard.  Hudson Valley Agriculture is a leader in farm innovation and has successfully carried its farm families into the 21st century.  Collaborative efforts have led to sustainable ventures that are positive models as e plan for the future of our farming communities.  This 3rd Biennial Conference will focus on the trends and ventures that have made our agriculture successful.  The conference is sponsored by a number of organizations including the Columbia Hudson Partnership, Columbia Land Conservancy and Hudson Valley Agribusiness Development.  Registration is $30.  For more information about the conference call Joseph Heller at (845) 883-7162 ext 104 or visit their website at www.hvap.org.
First Niagara Bank After Hours - March 21, 2007
First Niagara Bank will host a Business After Hours for Chamber members on Wednesday, March 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  First Niagara was founded as a community bank more than 135 years ago.  Today they are a financial services company committed to the same community-oriented philosophy, yet they are able to serve a greater number of customers with added products, services and convenience.  First Niagara has branches in 24 counties across New York State and eight in Columbia County.  The After Hours will be held at the Greenport Branch located at 160 Fairview Avenue in Hudson.  Please click here for more information.
Tourism Leadership Luncheon - March 28, 2007
Local 111 Restaurant will host the Tourism Leadership Luncheon on Wednesday, March 28 at 12:00 pm.  Owners Max Dannis and Linda Gatter will speak about their project and how they developed the restaurant.  You will also hear from Mary Anne Lee, Executive Director of the Spencertown Academy about their exciting programs and initiatives.  Local 111 Restaurant is located at 111 Main Street in Philmont.  The cost is $15 and includes a light lunch.  Space is limited.   Please click here to register for this event.
Legislative Breakfast - April 13, 2007
Come meet your local and state legislators at the Chamber's annual Legislative Breakfast on Friday, April 13.  The breakfast will feature newly elected Assemblymen Marc Molinaro and Peter Lopez and Senator Stephen Saland.  Additional legislators are expected to attend.  The breakfast will be held at Columbia-Greene Community College from 7:30 to 9:00 am.  The cost is $15.  Please click here for more information.

Women's Networking Luncheon - April 18, 2007
Jackson's Old Chatham House will host the Women's Networking Luncheon on Wednesday, April 18 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.  Networking luncheons provide a great opportunity for area businesspeople to promote their business to other business professionals.  Jackson's Old Chatham House is located in the Village Square in Old Chatham.  The cost is $18 for members and $24 for non-members.  Please click here for more information.

Darrow School After Hours - April 26, 2007

18th Annual Crystal Apple Award Gala - Post Event News
The Chamber is pleased to congratulate Columbia Memorial Hospital as the recipient of the 18th Annual Crystal Apple Award.  The Gala was held on February 16 at Lippera's at the Chatham House.  Over 115 attendees enjoyed dinner crafted by the staff at Lippera's.   The five finalists included: Columbia Hudson Partnership, Columbia Memorial Hospital, Local 111 Restaurant, LLC,  PS/21 Performing Spaces for the 21st Century and Tierra Farm, Inc.   The Crystal Apple Award is presented to a Chamber member business to recognize an extraordinary contribution to economic progress, community improvement, and the quality of life in Columbia County during 2006.  Please click here for more post event information and to view the photo gallery.
Chamber Stats

Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP)
If your small business is faced with a technical challenge SATOP can provide up to 40 hours of FREE technical assistance for qualified requests, utilizing the vast engineering expertise of NASA and participating Alliance Partners (NASA contractors, sub-contractors or Universities).  SATOP is designed to speed the transfer of US Space Program knowledge and technology to small businesses, to provide economic benefits to the community, and to raise public awareness of the Space program.  Please click here for more information.

Join members of the School of Visual Arts distinguished faculty at the Darrow School in New Lebanon for exciting programs in painting, sculpture, woodworking, ceramics and photography.  The studio-based program focuses on providing a forum for discussion and self-expression, as well as guidance and support to advance your conceptual and technical skills.  The Summer Institute offers a stimulating environment for artists to come together to create, discuss and develop their artwork while enjoying all that makes Columbia County a summer haven for the arts  To learn more about this program you are invited to attend an information session on Saturday, March 3 from 2:00 to 3:30 pm.  The session will be held at Columbia County Council on the Arts.  For more information about Columbia County Council on the Arts call (518) 671-6213 or visit their website at www.artscolumbia.org.


Taconic Hills Performing Arts Center will feature Earth Angels on Friday, March 30 and Saturday, March 31 at 7:25 pm.  The cost is $12.  Earth Angels, in their eleventh and final season, will perform "Memories", The Farewell Show.  The high energy musical will feature new and exciting numbers, along with some of the audience's favorite songs from the past ten seasons.  The Earth Angels are a not-for-profit group, made up of seventy-four volunteers who contribute to local charities.  A portion of the proceeds from "Memories" will go to the Dollars for Scholars of Taconic Hills program.  To date the Earth Angels have donated $151,000 to the Taconic Hills School. For more information about the Taconic Hills Performing Arts Center call (518) 325-0447 or visit their website at www.taconichills.k12.ny.us.

Tech Valley High School received 135 applications for this innovative new school's first class in September.  Forty students have been chosen by lottery to start in the fall.  The school, which will focus on math, science, and technology, is a joint venture of Questar III BOCES and Capital Region BOCES.  Together, these BOCES, in cooperation with 48 school districts in seven counties, are creating a new school that will expand the range of opportunities available to more than 124,000 students.  The school will be housed at the headquarters of MapInfo Corporation in the Rensselaer Technology Park in in Troy through the 2008-2009 school year.  In 2009 it will move to its own facility in Rensselaer County.  For more information about Tech Valley High School visit their website at www.techvalleyhigh.org.

Community Events

The Columbia County Council on the Arts 12th Annual Juried Art Show will be on view from March 3 through April 7 at the Hudson Opera House.  The opening reception will take place on Saturday, March 3 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, with awards presented at 6:00 pm.  Hours for viewing the exhibition are Monday through Saturday from 12:00 to 5:00 pm.  Each year the Arts Council encourages its artist members to submit their work for possible inclusion in the Annual Juried Art Show.  Work in five different categories were accepted which include:  sculpture, painting, works on paper, mixed media and photography.  For more information about Columbia County Council on the Arts call (518) 671-6213 or visit their website at www.artscolumbia.org.

The Taconic Hills Performing Arts Center will feature Quickstep to perform an afternoon of old Irish music, song and dance on Sunday March 11 at 3:00 pm.  Quickstep will entertain the entire family with moving ballads, fiery fiddles and steps so quick you won't want to blink.  Sentimental songs, a flurry of fiddles, fine instrumentation and fast flying feet will be featured with poetry and lighthearted stories in the Irish tradition.  Contemporary Celtic music will be played along with some of the best of the old ballads, jigs, reels and songs from the old sod.  Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children and students   For more information about the Taconic Hills Performing Arts Center call (518) 325-0447 or visit their website at

The Ghent Playhouse will feature "Tintypes" March 16 through April 1.  "Tintypes", is a kaleidoscopic vaudeville of American life and the tumultuous times between 1880 and the Depression.  The delightful musical journey has a cast of five representing several well-known historical figures.  The characters bring to life a colorful time which brought electricity, industrialization, the strife between rich and poor, and America's love affair with the automobile.  "Tintypes" is a musical melting pot which uses as its base the Great American Song book.  Tickets are $12 for Playhouse members and $15 for the general public.  For more information about The Ghent Playhouse call (518) 392-6264 or visit their website at www.ghentplayhouse.org.
