Taconic Farms Invested in Columbia County

While local economic discussions have been dominated lately by news of several companies leaving our county, there are still strong, viable Columbia County businesses that continue to thrive and provide much needed employment opportunities.  One of the largest county employers, Taconic Farms, Inc., has continued to grow since being founded 56 years ago by Robert Phelan. Best in Show to Award Beneficiaries

The Best in Show Public Art Project came to a close at the Dog Gone! Gala Benefit Auction on October 12 at Helsinki on the Hudson.  With over 300 in attendance, people came from near and far to bid on their favorite dog and give them a permanent home.  During the event the beneficiaries of the Auction were announced.  The eightbeneficiaries will receive $10,000 and include Animal Kind, City of Hudson Quadricential Committee, Columbia-Greene Humane Society, Help Orphan Puppies, Hudson Area Association Library, Hudson Opera House, Operation Unite NY and the Salvation Army.  The Chamber and Arts Council will be presenting the checks to the beneficiaries at an 11:00 am ceremony on November 14 at Hudson Park Restaurant.  The Chamber would like to thank the sponsors of Best in Show for supporting this project and everyone that volunteered their time and talents.  For more information contact the Chamber at mail@columbiachamber-ny.com.

Columbia Land Conservancy Business After Hours - November 6, 2008
The Columbia Land Conservancy will host a Business After Hours on Thursday, November 6 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The Columbia Land Conservancy works in partnership with landowners and communities in Columbia County to protect wildlife habitat, farmland, and rural open space, and to encourage balanced growth.  They also offer free education and recreation programs to children and adults.  Business After Hours' offer excellent networking opportunities for area business people. Women's Networking Luncheon - November 12, 2008
Kozel's Restaurant will host a Women's Networking Luncheon on Wednesday, November 12 from 12:00 to 1:30 pm.  Additional networking will be available until 2:00 pm.  Networking luncheons provide a great opportunity for area businesspeople to promote their business to other business professionals.  Kozel's Restaurant is located on Route 9H in Ghent.  The cost is $18 for members and $24 for non-members.  The event is sponsored by First Niagara Bank, Kinderhook Bank, Taconic Farms, Inc, Clear Channel, Radio, Midhudsonmedia, The Register Star/Chatham Courier, Sierra Capital, and Prime Columbia Greene Medical Associates. Holiday Business After Hours Hosted by Hudson Park Restaurant - December 11, 2008
Join the Chamber for a festive holiday event as Hudson Park Restaurant hosts the annual Holiday Business After Hours on Thursday, December 11 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  The event is being sponsored by Fingar Insurance and will give members the opportunity to meet the 2009 Board of Directors, network and enjoy great hors d'oeuvres and cocktails.  Hudson Park is a proposed 16-field baseball and softball facility for teenagers that will be situated on the Livingston/Greenport border and promises to be a boom for the local economy as well as for the kids who will get to play there. Buy Local Business Expo - October 23, 2008 - A Great Success
With over 450 people in attendance and 70 local exhibitors the sold out Expo was a great success.  The Expo attracted crowds from both the business community and the public.  The Expo featured free informational seminars, a local food tasting, and much more.  Exhibitors also raffled off prizes and handed out a wide variety of giveaways at their booths. The Expo was held to highlight the many great businesses that you can find right here at home and the Chamber looks forward to making the 2009 Expo even better next year!  Thank you to all the 2008 Expo Sponsors for making this event possible. Health Insurance Open Enrollment for Sole Proprietors - November 1-30, 2008
The month of November is Open Enrollment month for sole proprietors.  If you need to make changes to your plan, please remember to do so during this time.  Changes will go into effect January 1, 2009.  You may make changes or additions to your current health or dental insurance.  New rates and any plan changes will be mailed by the Chamber's health insurance administrator EP Nevins Insurance Agency as soon as they become available from the insurance carriers.  Things to look for are new Medicare Advantage products and a new product offering from MVP Healthcare.  Erin Nevins of EP Nevins Insurance Agency will be available to schedule appointments in Columbia County every Monday in November.   To setup an appointment or for more information contact Erin Nevins at (518) 464-0400 or erin@epnevins.com.

Member News

Two of Us Productions in collaboration with the Roving Actors Repertory Ensemble, Inc. (R.A.R.E.) presents the musical "Man of La Mancha", the classic musical drama of hope, humanity, and impossible dreams.  The show will run November 14-16 and November 21-22 at Ichabod Crane High School in Valatie.  "Man of La Mancha" was adapted from the book Don Quixote de La Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes written in 1605.  Considered by many to be one of the great literary classics, the 403rd anniversary of the novel's publishing is being celebrated this year.  There will be a full pit orchestra used for this production.  For tickets or more information call 1-866-811-4111 or visit their website at www.theatermania.com.

The Columbia-Greene Diabetes Coalition, a program of the Healthcare Consortium will present the monthly meeting on Friday, November 7 from 3:00 to 4:00 pm.  The month the meeting will focus on healthy options and will feature Christine Hertler, RN, BSN who will discuss nutrition, portion control and smart food choices.  The meeting will be held at the Columbia County Human Services Building located at 325 Columbia Street in Hudson.  For more information about the Healthcare Consortium call (518) 822-8820 or visit their website at www.columbiahealthnet.org.

The Hudson Opera House will feature Spencer Day, a uniquely American singer/songwriter on Friday, November 14 at 8:00 pm.  Day comes to HOH with release of his new CD, "Vagabond".  With a blend of jazz, pop, soul and folk, his smooth baritone voice interprets his original compositions and a touch of humor.  Day's work reveals the influences of such diverse composers as Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Joni Mitchell, Carol King, John Lennon and Paul Simon.  Day has appeared on national television and performed at some of the finest music venues in the United States.  For tickets or more information about the Hudson Opera House call (518) 822-1438 or visit their website at www.hudsonoperahouse.org.

Run away with the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus and be home by bedtime! Students will get an introduction to basic 3 object juggling, object balancing, basic funambulistics (stilts, rolla bola, rolling globe) and partner juggling. Each session will focus on warm up and dexterity exercises, skill building and practice, and goal evaluation. Instructor will help each student set realistic goals for weekly practice and final, informal presentation. Great skill set for actors seeking to enhance their versatility. Instructor Stephanie Monseu is a professional circus, variety artist and teacher, with a 15 year career as a juggler, stilt walker, fire eater, ringmistress, physical comedian, and high wire stunt artist. Special Olympics New York is proud to be hosting the 2nd annual Polar Plunge in Lake George on December 13.  A Polar Plunge is a wild, crazy, and fun event to raise awareness and funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.  It's easy to get involved.  Simply log on to www.specialolympicsny.org and click on Lake George Plunge.  From there you will be able to form a team, invite your contacts to join your team, create your own personal Plunge page all with a few clicks of a mouse.  The Polar Plunge will help raise funds to provide year-round sports training and athletic competitions for children and adults living with intellectual disabilities.  New York has the largest Special Olympics program in the country, serving more than 46,000 athletes.  For more information about the Special Olympics Polar Plunge contact Marianne Bosshart, Columbia County representative at (518) 329-2078 or visit their website at www.specialolympicsny.org.

Community Events

On Wednesday, November 12 at 12:00 pm, Columbia County Bounty invites farmers and consumers into chef's kitchens for the annual Farm to Chef Tour.  The tour starts in the kitchen of the Chatham Co-Op.  One of the area's newest chefs, Chef Jeff Loshinsky, will do a demonstration on roasting autumn root vegetables and how to season to add flavor.  Then, Carol Hargis of the Chocolate Moose will show how they create their delicious local hand-dipped creations at their shop in Chatham.  The group will also get to go behind the scenes into the kitchen of master baker Madeline Delosh at her new Mado Patisserie in Chatham.  All Bounty members are invited to the Farm to Chef Tour, and all are welcome to join the Bounty for an annual membership of $25 in order to attend this tour and other Bounty events. The Hudson-Chatham Winery will host a Sweet & Savory Tasting event on Saturday, November 15 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.  At this special event visitors can sample a selection of artisan breads and cheeses from bakers and creameries in Columbia County and the Hudson Valley.  A great way to learn about wine and cheese pairings for the holidays.  Then enjoy the Holiday Gift Basket Weekend on November 28-30.  On Black Friday and through the weekend visitors can create personalized gift baskets with the winery's selection of wines, syrups, cheeses, chocolates, preserves, honey, pancake mixes and more.  Lots of great ideas for local gifts for the holidays.  For more information about Hudson-Chatham Winery call (518) 392-WINE or visit their website at www.hudson-chathamwinery.com.

The Ghent Playhouse will feature the Pantoloons in an original production of "Jack and the Beanstalk" from Friday, November 28 through Sunday, December 14.  A Pantoloon's production at Thanksgiving has now become a holiday tradition in Columbia County, with cross-dressing jokes, political jokes and much schtick.  "Jack and the Beanstalk" is the ninth production by the Pantoloons in Columbia County.  The Pantoloons productions are for children 3 to 103 years and audience participation is encouraged.  For tickets or more information about The Ghent Playhouse call (518) 392-6264 or visit their website at www.ghentplayhouse.org.
