Join us for the Columbia-Greene Chili Cook-Off & Riverfront Fair - October 1, 2006
This exciting two county event will be held on Sunday, October 1 from 12:00 to 5:00 pm.  The event will take place at both Hudson Riverfront Park in Hudson and Athens Riverfront Park in Athens.   The event is a one-day outdoor family festival designed to celebrate the I Love New York 2006 Fall Festival, highlighting agriculture, culinary and cultural tourism in Columbia and Greene Counties.  Activities will be held on both sides of the river and will include the chili cook-off contest, farmer's market, boat ride between Hudson and Athens, children's arts, culinary and humane education activities and live cultural entertainment.  The Chamber's Buy Local Business Expo is proud to sponsor free water transportation in conjunction with Hudson Cruises for this event.    For more information about the Columbia-Greene Chili Cook-off & Riverfront Fair call Mexican Radio at (518) 828-7770 or visit the website http://mexrad.com/ChiliCookoff.html.
Planning a Future for Farms in the Hudson Valley Conference
On Saturday, November 4, a one-day conference is being held focused on the role that towns can play in supporting local farm businesses and protecting farmland.  The conference will seek to:  Educate town and county officials about the planning tools that can be used to support farms; motivate officials to make agriculture a higher priority in local planning; and highlight success stories of local governments' actions in support of agriculture.  The conference will be held from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm at Columbia-Greene Community College.  Please click here for more information.
The Pocketbook Factory Business After Hours to Celebrate ArtsWalk - October 2, 2006
Join us to celebrate ArtsWalk at the Chamber's Business After Hours on October 2 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  The Pocketbook Factory located on North 6th Street will host the event.  The Pocketbook Factory is an enormous 25,000 square foot space that is in the process of being renovated to create exhibition spaces to showcase more artists than ever before.  ArtsWalk is a 10-day visual and performing arts festival produced by the Columbia County Council on the Arts.  ArtsWalk will kick off its 12th year on September 29 and end on October 9 after two weekends of exciting exhibits and events celebrating the County's artists and their art.  Please click here for more information.
Register for the Buy Local Business Expo - October 26, 2006
Get your registration in now for the Buy Local Business Expo.  The Expo will be held on Thursday, October 26 at Columbia-Greene Community College and will run from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.  The event will feature over 60 booths to showcase your products and services to Columbia and Greene County businesses and residents.  There is only a limited number of booths available and spaces are filling up quickly.  A free booth will be provided to businesses that serve food at the event.   Booth prices start at $100 for members. Women's Networking Luncheon - November 8, 2006
Yorkshire Farms Restaurant will host a Women's Networking Luncheon on Wednesday, November 8.  The luncheon will run from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm with additional networking available until 2:00 pm.  Networking Luncheons provide a great opportunity for area businesspeople to promote their business to other business professionals.  Yorkshire Farms Restaurant is located at 484 Route 23 in Claverack.  This event is sponsored by National Union Bank of Kinderhook, First Niagara Bank, Midhudsonmedia, The Register Star/Chatham Courier, and Prime Columbia-Greene Medical Associates, PC.  Please click here for more information.
Tourism Leadership Luncheon - November 15, 2006
The Tourism Committee of the Chamber will host the fourth luncheon for local tourism leaders on Wednesday, November 15 at 12:00 pm at Hudson Valley Academy of Performing Arts.  A presentation by Carl Ritchie from Copake Theatre Company will be given.  The three previous luncheons have sold out, so we recommend getting your reservations in early.  The cost is $15.    Hudson Valley Academy of Performing Arts is located at 957 Route 82 in West Taghkanic.  Please click here for more information.

Hornet's Nest Paintball After Hours - November 16, 2006
Hornet's Nest Paintball will host a Business After Hours on Thursday, November 16.  This is your chance to get in on the action.  They will offer paintball demonstrations from 4:00 to 5:00 pm.  The formal Business After Hours program will run from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  Hornet's Nest Paintball is New York's highest rated paintball facility.  Located on 100 acres in Ancramdale, the Club features a 9600 square foot heated indoor arena and pro shop and many courses.  They offer fun for both the novice and seasoned player.  Hornet's Nest Paintball is located at 746 Roche Lane in Ancramdale.    Please click here for more information.

Chamber Stats

Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP)
If your small business is faced with a technical challenge SATOP can provide up to 40 hours of FREE technical assistance for qualified requests, utilizing the vast engineering expertise of NASA and participating Alliance Partners (NASA contractors, sub-contractors or Universities).  SATOP is designed to speed the transfer of US Space Program knowledge and technology to the private sector, to provide economic benefits to the community, and to raise public awareness of the Space program.  Please click here for more information.

Business Updates

On September 30, Space 360 will be hosting a special luncheon in celebration of ArtsWalk.  The lunch will be prepared by New York City Caterer, Ralph Lupoli.  In addition to a sensational lunch menu Ralph Lupoli will be baking cookies all afternoon and discussing the Cooking Demonstration and Classes he has planned for their Autumn and Winter season.  You will also be able to meet the eight artists who are exhibiting at Space 360 during ArtsWalk.  The Luncheon will run from 12:30 to 2:00 pm.  For more information about Space 360 call (518) 697-3360 or visit their website at www.360warren.com.

The Columbia-Greene Diabetes Coalition invites you to join their group for the October 6 support group at the Greene County Office Building located at 411 Main Street in Catskill.  Meetings are held from 3:00 to 4:00 pm in the fourth floor conference room and are free of charge.  The meetings are held the first Friday of each month at alternate sites in Columbia and Greene Counties.  This month Scott Blum, Certified Diabetes Educator, RD, from Bayer Healthcare will be facilitating this month's topic, Monitoring Diabetes.   The Columbia-Greene Diabetes Coalition is a program of the Healthcare Consortium.  For more information about the Healthcare Consortium call (518) 822-8820 or visit their website at www.columbiahealthnet.org.

On Saturday, October 7at 8:00 pm, the Taconic Hills Performing Arts Center welcomes Livingston Taylor, singer, songwriter and performer known for his contemporary music.  Master on the guitar and piano and divine voice, Livingston's performances are truly remarkable.  Tickets are $15 floor and $20

The Louis F. Payn Foundation will be holding an open house on Saturday, October 21 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.  The Payn Home, is a private not-for-profit retirement residence which provides a home-like living environment for seniors who choose to live in a community setting.  The handsome brick building set amid trees, rolling lawns and beautiful gardens can accommodate up to 24 residents.  The Payn Home is located at 12 Coleman Street in Chatham.  If you would like to learn more about the Payn Home please call (518) 392-4971 or visit their website at www.paynhome.org.

In collaboration with Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and the Columbia County Council on the Arts, Hudson Opera House presents a panel discussion about legal topics that every arts professional should understand.  Topics include intellectual property; contracts; and entity choice and formation including non-profit and for-profit options.  Attorneys  from the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts will answer audience questions.  This is a free event.  The panel will be held on Saturday, October 21 and begins at 2:00 pm.  For more information about Hudson Opera House call (518) 828-1438 or visit their website at www.hudsonoperahouse.org.

The Arts in Education Program of the New York State Council on the Arts is pleased to announce the designation of the Columbia County Council on the Arts as the coordinating agency for the Hudson Valley Roundtable, the newest in a network of arts in education resource centers established throughout the state by NYSCA.  The roundtables function as THE clearing house in a region for arts in education practitioners.  These include teaching artists, funders, classroom arts and non-arts teachers, administrators, cultural institutions, parents and any other interested parties.  The Hudson Valley Roundtable, the CCCA will organize a series of regional arts in education information-sharing sessions throughout the valley.  For more information about the Columbia County Council on the Arts call (518) 671-6213 or visit their website at www.artscolumbia.org.


Community Events

The Columbia County Council on the Arts will host the 12th Annual Hudson ArtsWalk, September 30 through October 9.  This is one of Columbia County's and the Hudson River Valley's largest events.  ArtsWalk features cutting edge visual and installation art, sculpture, dance, music, with school-aged portrait artists in pocket parks and a steady stream of art auctions, mural-making, sidewalk chalk art, fine food and other astonishments.  Art will be displayed at various locations throughout Hudson.  For more information about Columbia County Council on the Arts call (518) 671-6213 or visit their website at www.artscolumbia.org.

On Thursday, October 19 the FilmColumbia Festival returns for its 7th season of outstanding independent films and exciting events.  FilmColumbia hosted by the Chatham Film Club will be held at the historic Crandell Theatre in Chatham and will show 19 independent films, documentaries, shorts, and animations from around the world.  The Festival will run from Thursday, October 19 through Sunday, October 22.  Tickets for the Festival go on sale September 30.  For more information about FilmColumbia Festival call (518) 392-3445 or visit their website at www.filmcolumbia.com.

Clermont State Historic Site will present a special festival just for dogs and the people who love them on Saturday, October 21.  The fourth annual "Every Dog Has His Day" will be an event filled with games, shopping, food and fun for guests with four legs or two.  From 11:00 am to 5:00 pm dogs and their owners will find more than enough to keep them busy, getting pampered, learning about new dog sports and competing in fun and relaxed contests.  This special event offers the opportunity to get your dog groomed, trained and exercised, happy and pampered all in the same day!  For more information about Clermont State Historic Site call (518) 537-4240 or visit their website at www.friendsofclermont.org.
