October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Healthcare
Consortium has scheduled screenings on Columbia County
on two dates. Many strides have been made to combat
this terrible disease through mammography and breast exams,
but not everyone is getting screened. This is an excellent
reminder for all women to seek opportunities and venues to
get screened. Early detection saves lives. On
October 10 the mobile mammography van will be at the New Lebanon
Fire House from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and on October 19 the
van will be at Providence Hall in Hudson from 10:00 am to

Stageworks/Hudson hosts the renowned Thunder Bay
Collaborative production "Sea Change and Alice: End of
Daze" on Friday, October 5 at 8:00 pm and Saturday, October
6 at 2:00 pm. This is a highly visual music theater

Walking
the dog Theater, in collaboration with Basilica Industria
will feature "Daemons - A Suite of One-Acts" from
October 12 through October 31. The three rarely seen
theater pieces include Bertolt Brecht's Beggar or the Dead
Dog, Archibald MacLeish's Nobodaddy and the world premiere
of Max Freund' Reflections of a Daemon. For tickets

After years of collaboration and partnerships
with educators, business leaders, organized labor and government
officials, Tech Valley High School celebrated
its official opening on September 12. More than 200
gathered at Pitney Bowes Software in the Rensselaer Technology
Park where the school will be housed temporarily until it
finds a permanent location. This first class of this
innovative school is a joint venture of Capital Region BOCES
and Questar III and has 40 students 20 boys and 20 girls from
35 school districts in seven counties served by the two BOCES.
The counties include: Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer,
Schenectady, Schoharie, and Saratoga. For more information

The Taconic Hills Performing
Arts Center will feature the Wickers Creek Bank on
Saturday, October 13 at 7:30 pm. The Wickers are a bluegrass
and American string band with sounds of classic and contemporary
Bluegrass, country and Appalachian music that carry the perfectly
blended harmonies of these amazing string instrumentalists.
The band's repertoire performs acoustic traditional American
music mixed with French Canadian, Celtic and New England dance
tunes. Tickets are $6 for students and seniors and $12

The Healthcare
Consortium has scheduled its 4th annual Community
Cancer Walk/Run "Walking with Our Neighbors for Our Neighbors",
for Sunday, October 14. The 5K Walk/Run event is a fundraiser
for the Community Cancer Fund, which helps Columbia County
residents affected by cancer who experience financial hardship.
The event will kickoff in front of Kinderhook Martial Arts,
the event co-sponsor, in Empire Plaza on Route 9 in Valatie.
Registration begins at 12:30 pm with a start-off at 1:00 pm.

Enjoy
an evening of a Dinner Comedy Show on Friday,
October 19 at 6:30 pm. Sponsored by the Hudson Lions
Club, the event will be held at Meadowgreens Restaurant in
Ghent. Comedians Tom Briscoe (as seen on Comedy Central)
and Steve Caouette (as seen on "The Late Show" with
David Letterman) who headline the best comedy clubs in the
country. Tom Briscoe's comedy stems from his life at
home and work. He shares twisted stories, jokes and
funny predicaments he finds himself in as he searches for
the perfect job. Steve Caouette combines impressions,
improv, sound effects and classic stand-up comedy to push
the comedic envelope. Proceeds will benefit the Hudson
Lions charity fund which benefits our local community.

The
Mental Health Association of Columbia-Greene Counties, Inc.
will hold its first annual fund-raising Pumpkin Walk
and Reception on Saturday, October 20 at Olana State Historic
Site. Watch the sun set over the Hudson from the grounds
of Olana while taking part in the afternoon reception.
Beginning at 4:00 pm, the program will feature local food
and wine while showcasing local art and live music.
Individual tickets for this event will be available for $45
and $10 for children 12 and under. Tickets include admission
to the Pumpkin Walk. At dusk, take a magical stroll
along a path of lighted jack 'o lanterns creatively carved
by children from our community. Tickets for this family
experience are $5. Groups of four or more receive discounted

The
Hudson River Studio will host a unique exhibition
entitled: Hudson Valley Style, Then and Now: The
Picturesque Renderings of George Ellsworth Shear.
A collection of exquisite rendering of notable buildings in
the Hudson Valley will be on display. Shears is a local
artist and architect renowned for his meticulously researched
and executed images of extraordinary homes. The exhibition
will take place October 4-8 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. An
opening reception will be held on October 6. The HudsonRiver

Leaf Peeper Concerts, Columbia County's longest
continually performing arts organizations, celebrates its
26th season with two October concerts. Leaf Peepers
Concerts bring classical music to the public during the county's
most colorful season, fall. The concerts will be held
on October 13 at 7:30 pm at the Copake United Methodist Church
and October 27 at 7:30 pm at St. James Catholic Church in

The Alzheimer Association of Northeastern NY will
present the 11th annual Caregiver's Conference on November
11 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. This annual conference is
a wonderful opportunity to hear from leaders in the field
of Alzheimer's disease and learn about the latest in research
and treatment options. It's also a chance to share experiences
and lessons learned as only caregivers can. The conference
will feature two keynote speakers along with workshops which
are designed with caregiver education in mind. More

The 13th annual
ArtsWalk, an 11-day festival of visual and performing
arts kicked off on Friday, September 28 and runs through Monday,
October 8. ArtsWalk starts with its third annual benefit
dinner, Eat For Art. Joining the Pocketbook Factory
as a site for art will be the 30,000 square foot former Cannonball
Factory. For the first time Columbia County Council
on the Arts is organizing three types of shows distributed
between the two magical buildings: the Members Open
Show, the Juried Art Show, and a series of Curated Shows -
themed shows chosen by area artists and curators. For

FilmColumbia returns for its
eighth festival season on Thursday, October 18. Hosted
by The Chatham Film Club at the historic Crandell Theatre,
the festival will screen more than 35 independent films, documentaries,
shorts and animations from around the world. The festival
will expand this year into two venues. In addition to
the Crandell, they will be screening the animation program
and some film shorts at the historic Morris Memorial Community

Clermont State Historic Site will celebrate
the spirit of Halloween on Friday, October 19 and Saturday,
October 20 with the Legends by Candlelight Spook Tour and
Halloween Harvest. The fun will begin Friday night with
the Legends by Candlelight Spook Tour at 6:00 & 6:30 pm.
Visitors will find the mansion fully decorated for this spooky
holiday. The guided tour will lead guests through the
mansion and out into the estate grounds where they will meet
the lurking ghosts of Clermont's past. On Saturday,
the Halloween Harvest will feature food, live music, sport
demonstrations, Jack-O-Lantern contest, kids' and dogs' costumer
contests, crafts and much more. This is a family and
