Chamber Sponsors Free Transportation for October 1st Hudson-Athens Riverfront Fair
The Chamber's Buy Local Business Expo is proud to sponsor free water transportation in conjunction with Hudson Cruises for an exciting two County event.  Plan to attend the Columbia-Greene Chili Cook-off & Riverfront Fair on Sunday, October 1 from 12:00 to 5:00 pm.  The event will take place at both Hudson Riverfront Park in Hudson and Athens Riverfront Park in Athens.   The event is a one-day outdoor family festival designed to celebrate the I Love New York 2006 Fall Festival, highlighting agriculture, culinary and cultural tourism in Columbia and Greene Counties.  Activities will be held on both sides of the river and will include the chili cook-off contest, farmer's market, boat ride between Hudson and Athens, children's arts, culinary and humane education activities and live cultural entertainment.   For more information about the Columbia-Greene Chili Cook-off & Riverfront Fair call Chili Cook-off Committee Chair Lori Selden at (518) 828-7770 or email info@mexrad.com.
County Supervisor's Reception - September 13, 2006

Fingar Insurance Business After Hours - September 21, 2006
Fingar Insurance will host a Business After Hours to celebrate 75 years of business excellence on Thursday, September 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  Fingar Insurance is owned and operated by Gregory C. Fingar and Mark W. Fingar.  The agency was established in 1931 by their grandfather Luther B. The Pocketbook Factory Business After Hours to Celebrate ArtsWalk - October 2, 2006
Join us to celebrate ArtsWalk at the Chamber's Business After Hours on October 2 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  The Pocketbook Factory located on North 6th Street will host the event.  The Pocketbook Factory is an enormous 25,000 square foot space that is in the process of being renovated to create exhibition spaces to showcase more artists than ever before.  ArtsWalk is a 10-day visual and performing arts festival produced by the Columbia County Council on the Arts.  ArtsWalk will kick off its 12th year on September 29 and end on October 9 after two weekends of exciting exhibits and events celebrating the County's artists and their art.  Please click here for more information.
Register for the Buy Local Business Expo - October 26, 2006
Get your registration in now for the Buy Local Business Expo.  The Expo will be held on Thursday, October 26 at Columbia-Greene Community College and will run from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.  The event will feature over 60 booths to showcase your products and services to Columbia and Greene County businesses and residents.  There is only a limited number of booths available.  A complimentary booth will be provided to businesses that serve food at the event.   Booth prices start at $100 for members.  Sponsorship of the event starts at $250. Columbia-Greene Superintendents Breakfast - Post Event News
The Columbia and Greene County Chambers of Commerce hosted the 2nd Annual Superintendents Breakfast on Tuesday, August 22.  Keynote speaker Joseph J. McGee, vice president of public policy and programs for the Business Council of Fairfield County, CT spoke about education and affordable housing as important keys to economic growth.  David Leavitt, Questar III's director of career, vocational and alternative education discussed the B.E.S.T. Program.  This program teaches students the skills and behaviors necessary for the workplace or college.  Mike Veeder, HVAC teacher at Questar discussed the importance of the B.E.S.T. Chamber Stats

Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP)
If your small business is faced with a technical challenge SATOP can provide up to 40 hours of FREE technical assistance for qualified requests, utilizing the vast engineering expertise of NASA and participating Alliance Partners (NASA contractors, sub-contractors or Universities).  SATOP is designed to speed the transfer of US Space Program knowledge and technology to the private sector, to provide economic benefits to the community, and to raise public awareness of the Space program.  Please click here for more information.

Business Updates

Hudson Mayor Richard Tracy has announced the week of September 25 as "Investments in Youth Week".  Investments in Youth is a privately funded program launched last year to offer help and hope to the at-risk youth population in the greater Hudson area.  Working in close partnership with the Hudson Youth Center and the local school district, it has provided a wide range of innovative, character-building programs.  Look for the insert in the October Chamber Connection to learn how you can get involved.  For more information about the Investments in Youth program call (518) 828-4360 ext 3194 or visit their website at www.investmentsinyouth.com.

Housing Resources of Columbia County will be holding a class for First-Time Homebuyers.  The class is held over 5 sessions and participants hear from various local experts who share information specifically tailored to first-time buyers.  Lenders will discuss how to determine if you are ready to buy a house, how to qualify for a mortgage, etc.  Evaluating different properties will be covered by a realtor, and an attorney will address legal aspects of the purchase and what to expect at closing. The Healthcare Consortium is pleased to partner with Gilda's Club Capital Region to bring a nationally-recognized pioneer in cancer support to lecture in the Columbia and Greene area.  The Healthcare Consortium and Gilda's Club Capital Region are sponsoring a free educational event for healthcare professionals on Friday, September 15 from 8:30 to 10:00 am at Columbia Golf and Country Club.  The honored guest speaker, Joanna Bull, MA, MFCC, will address the importance of social and emotional support for cancer patients and their families in her lecture entitled, "Diagnosis: Cancer - From diagnosis to recovery, does treatment address psycho-social issues?"  Joanna Bull is the Founder of Gilda's Club Worldwide, the headquarters organization that oversees the development of Gilda's Clubs throughout the world.  For more information about the Healthcare Consortium call (518) 822-8820 or visit their website at www.columbiahealthnet.org.

The Arts in Education Program of the New York State Council on the Arts is pleased to announce the designation of the Columbia County Council on the Arts as the coordinating agency for the Hudson Valley Roundtable, the newest in a network of arts in education resource centers established throughout the state by NYSCA.  The roundtables function as THE clearing house in a region for arts in education practitioners.  These include teaching artists, funders, classroom arts and non-arts teachers, administrators, cultural institutions, parents and any other interested parties.  The Hudson Valley Roundtable, the CCCA will organize a series of regional arts in education information-sharing sessions throughout the valley.  For more information about the Columbia County Council on the Arts call (518) 671-6213 or visit their website at www.artscolumbia.org.

Maude Maggart, one of today's hottest young stars in the world of cabaret music, will perform at the Hudson Opera House's Gifford Gala on Saturday, September 16.  In 5 short years, Maude Maggart has gained a passionate following from New York to Los Angeles, devoting herself to the rich legacy of the classic music of George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington.  Cocktails and dinner will precede Ms. Maggart's performance at the Gala.  Tickets for the Gala begin at $150.  Proceeds from the Gifford Gala will provide much-needed support for the ongoing programs and restoration of the Hudson Opera House.  For more information about the Hudson Opera House call (518) 822-1438 or visit their website at www.hudsonoperahouse.org.

The Columbia Hudson Partnership will host the MicroBusiness Seminar Series beginning on Tuesday, September 19.  This class is for entrepreneurs to begin training to start or expand a small business.  The class will meet once a week for eight weeks at Columbia-Greene Community College.  The instructors will lead the class in discussions covering legal issues, marketing, and the critical importance of cash flow.  The instructors come from throughout the region, and many are business owners themselves.  For more information about the Columbia Hudson Partnership or to request an application, please call Martha Lane, Small Business Counselor at (518) 828-4718 or visit their website at www.chpartnership.com. 

A symposium and resource fair for caregivers is making its return to Columbia-Greene Community College on September 22 from 12:00 to 3:30 pm.  "Keeping Loved Ones at Home is Priceless" will feature displays and representatives from the home care, nursing home and allied organizations serving and supporting family caregivers.  Speakers will also be on hand to address issues of vital importance to caregivers and answer their questions.  The event is planned and supported by a group of organizations including the Rotary Clubs of Columbia and Greene Counties, Northeast Health, Columbia County Chamber of Commerce and Columbia-Greene Community College.  Over 250 caregivers and 30 exhibitors attended the event last year.  Speakers presented a variety of topics last year and this year will feature home care providers, the role of technology in home care, emergency preparedness, care giving for children and respite care.  For more information about the event or to sign your organization up for a booth contact Robert Bodratti, Director of Community Services at the College at (518) 828-4181 ext. 3345.

Community Events

The Columbia Arts Team will presents Saturday Night LIV hosted by Liv Cummins on September 14-16.  All shows are at 8:00 pm at the Copake Memorial Park Building on Mountainview Road in Copake.  All Columbia County Chamber of Commerce members get in free on Thursday, September 14.  The show will feature The Really Convincing Players, physical comic Pat Ferri, jazz saxophonist "Miami Mo" Morgen, the pop!ternatives and more!  The Columbia Arts Team is also holding an all-day Songwriters Event on Saturday, September 30 at Stageworks/Hudson.  The day-long event will feature seminars, critiques and a concert, with well-known hit songwriters offering their experience and wisdom to the hit songwriters for tomorrow.  The cost is $75 for all-day admission and $25 to attend the concert only.  For more information about Columbia Arts Team call (518) 325-3045 or visit their website at www.columbiaartsteam.org.

Clear Channel Radio of the Hudson Valley presents the Third Annual Art in the Park on September 16.  The event will take place in 7th Street Park in Hudson from 10:00 am to 4:00 p.m.   The festival is open to all artists who work in oils, watercolors, acrylics, charcoals, pastels, pencils, ink, photography or any medium.  There is a $20 application fee, which is waived for high school and college students.  This event is sponsored by Open MRI of Hudson.  For more information about Clear Channel Radio call (518) 828-5006 or visit their website at www.985litefm.com.
