Columbia County Bounty Restaurant Week - September 24 - September 28, 2007
Columbia County Bounty is pleased to announce the first annual Restaurant Week from Monday, September 24 through Friday, September 28.  Restaurant Week is a 5 day celebration of Columbia County farms, plentiful autumn harvest and the expanding culinary scene.  During this exclusive week restaurants will showcase and highlight local food and products with specially designed 3-course prix fixe lunch and dinner menus.  Lunch prix fixe will be $20.07 and Dinner prix fixe $30.07.  The participating restaurants include:  The Blue Plate, The Carolina House, DA/BA, Kozel's Restaurant, Lippera's at the Chatham House, Local 111 Restaurant, Mexican Radio, Red Dot, Swiss Hutte and Vico Restaurant.  Restaurant Week will create wonderful opportunities for people to visit the county and sample a variety of exceptional dishes prepared by local chefs.  It will also serve as an enticement to introduce more people to the Columbia County Bounty program, whose mission is to promote and support networking connections between local producers and culinary businesses and educating the community about the preservation of our local farms through the purchase and use of local and regional sustainable foods and products.  For more information about Restaurant Week contact the Chamber at 828-4417 or mail@columbiachamber-ny.com.
Leadership Columbia County Set to Kick Off - Welcome Reception September 20, 2007
The Chamber is pleased to welcome the 16th Leadership Columbia County class slated to start this month with a two-day opening retreat.  This nine-month program will offer participants a close up look at key aspects of Columbia County as well as leadership skills training from experts.  The new class will begin the two-day retreat on September 20.  After completion of the first retreat day there will be a welcoming reception for the new class from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Space 360.  All Leadership Alumni and members of the business community are invited to attend this reception.  The cost is $15 and will include hors d'oeuvres and drinks.  Please contact the Chamber if you would like to attend at 828-4417 or mail@columbiachamber-ny.comClick here to read the full article.
Health Insurance Fair - October 31, 2007
Join us for the Health Insurance Fair on Wednesday, October 31 from 9:00 to 4:00 pm at Dunn Builders Supply in Hudson.  All major health insurance and dental carriers will be on hand to answer questions or discuss products.  Carriers include CDPHP, Blueshield of Northeastern NY, Empire Blue Cross, MVP Healthcare, GHI, Guardian Dental and Metlife.  Chamber Health Insurance Administrator Erin Nevins of EP Nevins Insurance Agency will also be there to answer more specific questions and to review pricing.  The Health Fair is open to sole proprietors and groups.  For more information contact the Chamber at 828-4417 or Erin Nevins at 464-0400 or erin@epnevins.com.

Chatham Village First Friday - September 7, 2007
The ferris wheel has come and gone, the side show packed up and moved on to a new venue - but special FAIR prices prevail September 7 in Chatham Village this First Friday of the month.  Look for balloons marking businesses offering special promotions and sales.  Sidewalk sales will dot the street with added value.  Welcome Home Antiques, open until 7 pm, will have the ever-popular $5 table setup in front of the store.  Look for unique one-of-a-kind vintage items at rock bottom prices.  Next door the Chocolate Moose will entice you with their special concoctions. County Supervisor's Reception - September 12, 2007
All public officials and Chamber members are invited to attend the annual County Supervisor's Reception on Wednesday, September 12 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  The Chamber will introduce the Gerald R. Simons Scholar Program for the Leadership Columbia County program in honor of the County leader.  The Chamber holds this annual event to express their gratitude to the Columbia County Board of Supervisors.  We encourage members to take this opportunity to network with your community leaders.  The event will be held at the Fireman's Home on Harry Howard Avenue in Hudson and is free of charge.  Please click here for more information.
Hawthorne Valley Business After Hours - September 26, 2007

Tourism Leadership Luncheon - October 16, 2007

The Buy Local Business Expo will be held on Thursday, October 25 at Columbia-Greene Community College. Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP)
If your small business is faced with a technical challenge SATOP can provide up to 40 hours of FREE technical assistance for qualified requests, utilizing the vast engineering expertise of NASA and participating Alliance Partners (NASA contractors, sub-contractors or Universities).  SATOP is designed to speed the transfer of US Space Program knowledge and technology to small businesses, to provide economic benefits to the community, and to raise public awareness of the Space program.  Please click here for more information.
Chamber Stats

Member News

The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services designed to revitalize the role of literature in American Culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of it's citizens.  The Big Read has selected the Hudson Area Association Library in partnership with Space 360/Hanover International to receive a $10,000 grant.  The grant monies will be used to develop a roster of events to encourage the community to read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.  The partnership is developing a program of activities in the City of Hudson, and the Town of Greenport and throughout Columbia and Greene counties to encourage a community-wide participation in October and November.  The book was a perfect choice based on having the Firemen's Association of New York's Firemen's Home and the Museum of Firefighting here in Hudson along with many historic firehouses.  The book can be enjoyed by readers at all levels and invites participation by high school and middle school students as well as their parents throughout all of Columbia County.   For more information on The Big Read contact the Hudson Area Association Library at (518) 828-1792 or website The Big Read website at www.neabigread.org.

The Columbia Hudson Partnership will begin classes for the next MicroBusiness Seminar Series on September 18.  The program brings together a group of entrepreneurs to begin training to start or expand a small business.  Once a week for eight weeks, they will meet at Columbia-Greene Community College where instructors will lead them in discussions covering legal issues, marketing ad the life blood of any business, cash flow.  All students qualify for ten hours of technical assistance from area consultants, paid for by the Partnership.  The cost of the program is $150.00, which is refunded upon completion in the form of either a one-year membership to the Columbia County Chamber or a gift certificate to an office supply store.  Scholarships are available.  For more information about Columbia Hudson Partnership call (518) 828-4718 or visit their website site at www.chpartnership.com.

Kinderhook Bank has promoted Alicia Coons to Branch Manager for their Chatham branch.  Previously the Chatham native served as Assistant Branch Manager for the bank's Greenport branch. The Hudson Opera House launches its eighth season of free after school teen theatre ensemble this fall.  Open auditions and rehearsals for all interested teens will begin Monday, September 24 and Tuesday, September 25 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.  The ensemble will continue to meet on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4 to 6 pm culminating with "It's Greek to Me", the Winter Season presentation of the original theatre piece adapted from Greek mythology at the Opera House as well as community and school venues.  For more information about programs at the Hudson Opera House call (518) 822-1438 visit their website to register at www.hudsonoperahouse.org.

Enjoy an evening of a Dinner Comedy Show on Friday, October 19 at 6:30 pm.  Sponsored by the Hudson Lions Club, the event will be held at Meadowgreens Restaurant in Ghent.  Comedians Tom Briscoe (as seen on Comedy Central) and Steve Caouette (as seen on "The Late Show" with David Letterman) who headline the best comedy clubs in the country.  Tom Briscoe's comedy stems from his life at home and work.  He shares twisted stories, jokes and funny predicaments he finds himself in as he searches for the perfect job.  Steve Caouette combines impressions, improv, sound effects and classic stand-up comedy to push the comedic envelope.  Proceeds will benefit the Hudson Lions charity fund which benefits our local community.  The cost is $35 per person for dinner and the show or $20 for the show only.  For more information contact Sharyn Richards at (518) 828-2692 or srrichards@yahoo.com.

The Taconic Hills Performing Arts Center will feature the Berkshire Hillsmen on Saturday, September 29.  The Berkshire Hillsmen are an award winning, championship men's barbershop chorus.  The Pittsfield chapter is part of the international organization, The Barbershop Harmony Society and was founded in 1957.  To date, the Berkshire Hillsmen has won 16 championship trophies including nine Northeast district small chorus championships.  The doors open at 6:30 pm and the show starts at 7:30 pm.  Tickets are $4 for students/seniors and $8 for adults.  For tickets or more information about the Taconic Hills Performing Arts Center call (518) 325-0447 or visit the website at www.taconichills.k12.ny.us/community/pac.

Leaf Peeper Concerts, Columbia County's longest continually performing arts organizations, celebrates its 26th season with three concerts.  Leaf Peepers Concerts bring classical music to the public during the county's most colorful season, fall.  The first concert will be held on September 29 at 7:30 pm at St. James Catholic Church in Chatham.  Other concert dates include October 13 at 7:30 pm at the Copake United Methodist Church and October 27 at 7:30 pm at St. James Catholic Church in Chatham.  Tickets are $20 per show or $50 for a series pass  For tickets or more information about the Leaf Peeper Concerts call (518) 325-3805.

Community Events

Join in a celebration of books at Spencertown Academy's second annual Festival of Books.  Spread over two weekends, September 7-9 and September 14-16, the Academy will host all things literary with author readings, panel discussions on topics relevant to the book industry today, a poetry tea, entertainment, a gallery exhibition of book art, and a Kid's Corner featuring visits by Clifford the Big Red Dog.  Over 10,000 gently used or new books in every category will be carefully sorted and on sale at very reasonable prices. The 5th Annual Harvest Day at Lindenwald will be an afternoon of family fun and interesting events to celebrate the importance of agriculture to our eighth president and its continued importance to all of New York.  The event will be held on Saturday, September 22 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.  The event will feature demonstrations, crafts, songs dance, food, and fun activities such as 19th Century children's games.
