HAWTHORNE VALLEY SCHOOL

To benefit the Class of 2003’s art history trip to Florence, Italy

Hawthorne Valley School Senior Class Art Auction, featuring Richard Caro, well-known quiltmaker

The Hawthorne Valley School senior class is hosting an art auction on Saturday, March 1st at 2 PM in the afternoon. The auction will take place in the new Fine Arts Building at the Hawthorne Valley School on Rt. 21C in Harlemville, just west of the Taconic State Parkway. The proceeds will help pay for the senior class¹ art history trip to Florence, Italy in mid-March.

Professional artists from the community, as well as the senior class students, have generously donated original artwork for the auction. The art items up for auction may be viewed the week prior to the auction in the School¹s new Fine Arts Wing. On March 1st the auction items will also be on view beginning at 1:00pm. Items up for bid include: paintings, prints, sculpture, tile mosaic work, hand-made knitted child’s sweater, ceramics, jewelry, hand-made marionettes, edible art, antiques, bed & breakfast stays and many other one-or-a kind items and services from the local community.

Local artist, Richard Caro, has created a quilt as the centerpiece for this auction, depicting the city of Florence. Mr. Caro, created the 65 x 45 inch cityscape quilt as a gift to the school and to his love of art history and and the city of Florence. The quilt is created using Mr. Caro¹s signature style using architectural themes, intricate pieced fabrics, bright colors, and hand quilting. In addition to the cotton fabrics used to create the quilt, Italian silk decorative fabrics were also used. Mr. Caro has worked in the quilt medium for more than 5 years and most recently was honored by having a quilt selected for inclusion in the juried show ³Tactile Architecture² at the 2002 International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas.
